FAQs
What happens during the first session?
The first session with a psychologist is called an intake session or initial assessment. It is typically focused on gathering information, identifying reasons for attending therapy, problem areas and establishing therapy goals to work through during the treatment phase. Depending on the complexity of the presenting concerns it may be completed over a few sessions. Psychologists aim to create a supportive environment where a client can feel comfortable, however sometimes the psychologist fit may not match. In these cases it is important to let your psychologist or admin know so that they can make other arrangements for you to get supported.
How long is each session?
Each sessions is 50 minutes.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions that a client will need to make progress will depend on the complexity of concern such as type of mental health difficulties, how persistent and severe the concern have been and how committed an individual is to the therapy process. Typically this information is discussed during the treatment and progress is assessed throughout treatment with the treating psychologist.
How often do I need to attend?
Regular attendance at sessions is important in order to work towards goals and make progress in therapy. Typically during the beginning of treatment clients will attend weekly and as the client progresses through their therapy goals they may move towards fortnightly or monthly. Please feel free to speak to your psychologist about this.
